Dr. Nandakumar Nagaraja is an Assistant Professor of Neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. He received his medical degree from Kempegowda Institute of Medical Sciences, Bangalore, India. He moved to the United States to pursue his passion for Neurology and Neuroscience. He completed his Master’s in Neuroscience at the College of Staten Island /City University of New York. He did his preliminary intern year at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in New York, and then Neurology Residency at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit. He graduated from Neurology Residency with the “Resident of the Year” award.

He completed his Vascular Neurology fellowship at National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, National Institutes of Health. He was a SPOTRIAS (Specialized Programs of Translational Research in Acute Stroke) stroke fellow at NINDS for two years. Before coming to University of Florida, Dr. Nagaraja worked at the University of Iowa as Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurology for 3 years and he was also a NIH StrokeNet Fellow for one year.

Dr. Nagaraja’s research interest is focused on understanding the pathophysiology of acute ischemic stroke with neuroimaging. He is working on several research projects related to magnetic resonance imaging in acute ischemic stroke. He has participated in several clinical trials in stroke since the time of starting his stroke fellowship. He has written blogs for the journal ‘Stroke’ and authored several articles that are primarily focused on stroke. He has contributed as a Stroke Outcomes Adjudicator for the studies funded by NHLBI and the FDA. He is board certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology. He is a member of professional societies including American Academy of Neurology, American Heart Association and American Stroke Association.
