Short call Monday through Friday begins at 5 pm and ends at 8 pm. Nightfloat and Saturday night call run from 8 pm until morning report at 8 am the following day. Weekend call runs 8am-8pm.
New consults received after 4:00 pm on weekdays may be deferred to the short call person unless urgent, and consults after 7:00 pm may be passed on to the nightfloat unless urgent. Similarly, consults after 7:00 am may be passed on to the day teams unless urgent. Of course, all urgent calls should be seen immediately regardless of when they are received.
Acceptable check-out includes follow-up of labs or scans, lumbar punctures that should be done the same day, and (generally) one new consult or E.R. call if workload reasonably prevented its completion.
Transfers should ideally be accepted for arrival during regular weekday hours. Non-urgent requests are preferably arranged for a time the inpatient residents will be present to receive the patient, usually before 5 pm. Still, we are a neurology team and can share in the care of our patients when good check-out is provided. Urgent transfers should be accepted willingly at any time, day or night.
The right balance of individual responsibility and sense of team work will lead to a strong service and good patient care.
