Duty Hours

Strict compliance with the ACGME’s duty hours rules is built into the schedule. Residents are scheduled to have one day in seven free of any patient care or educational responsibility averaged over the month. We have no work shift longer than 13 hours straight with our nightfloat system. Weekly hours are calculated such that residents even on the inpatient rotations should not exceed 80 hours in a given week, and must not exceed 80 hours averaged over a given rotation. Residents are required to sign off at the time designated to the resident relieving them in the schedule. This will ensure that residents do not work more than 80 hours per week. Residents will also be required to keep a log of their work hours to be submitted monthly to the residency coordinator. Hours spent in approved outside employment (see next section) will count toward all duty hour regulations.
