Have you heard about NICAP?
In 2010, Dr. Guzick and UF Health Leadership created the Interdisciplinary Clinical and Academic Programs (ICAP). One of the fourt ICAP, the Neuromedicine ICAP (NICAP) consists of institutional leaders, faculty, fellows, residents, staff, and both graduate and undergraduate interns. The Quality Improvement branch of the NICAP aims to address a variety of projects focused on the institutional Big Aims of Quality: Zero Harm, Reduce Variation, Increase Value and Transform Culture, all for the mission of Achieving the Perfecting of the Patient Experience. Under the guidance of Jacqueline Baron-Lee, PhD, the NICAP Quality Improvement program has created an internship that has grown to 40 students to meet the needs of Neuromedicine patients across UF Health.
In striving to create the perfect patient experience, interns rotate across clinical, administrative, and quality improvement arenas in the Neurosurgery and Neurology departments. Ongoing initiatives include the Wayfinding Guide program, offering patients direct guidance to their destination in the health system. For the first two week period of the Summer C term, NICAP interns have already accumulated 88 Wayfinding encounters. In addition, we are actively working to enhance rates of MyUFHealth utilization, circulation and effective documentation of Perfect Patient Experience (PPE) rounds, filing of Advance Directives, and use of a Neuromedicine specific Teach-Back protocol. These supplementary services help meet the needs of stakeholders and provide an invaluable resource for patients at UF Health. The internship has witnessed consistent, positive feedback and statistically significant outcomes thus far. Our hope is that the programs implemented by NICAP will continue to play a pivotal role in evolving and improving the culture of UF Health.
