Practical Proactive and Preventative Parkinson’s Disease Strategies for Management in the Hospital Setting

Congratulations Drs. Ariane Veilleux Carpentier, Ramzi G. Salloum, and Michael S. Okun, on the publication of “Practical Proactive and Preventative Parkinson’s Disease Strategies for Management in the Hospital Setting,” which appears in the July 4th issue of Parkinsonism and Related Disorders.

Introduction:

Providing high-quality inpatient care for persons with Parkinson’s disease (PD) presents unique challenges. One third of persons with PD visit the emergency department or will be admitted to the hospital annually. Persons with PD experience significantly higher hospitalization rates, longer admissions, and more complications when compared to the general population. Additionally, PD related comorbidities increase the risk of hospitalization. As the population of persons with PD continues to rise globally, the number of persons with PD in the hospital setting is expected to proportionally increase. To reduce morbidity and mortality, proactive strategies are needed to address the barriers to implementing practical and preventative measures among hospitalized persons with PD.
