Dose and Outcomes of Rehabilitation During Parkinson Hospitalization: A Nationwide Cohort Study

Congratulations on this significant contribution to Parkinson disease research and rehabilitation care!

Please join us in congratulating Drs. Hikaru Kamo, Rachael M. Burke, Tejas R. Mehta, Matthew Aaron Remz, Michael S. Okun, and Christopher W. Hess on the publication of “Dose and Outcomes of Rehabilitation During Parkinson Hospitalization: A Nationwide Cohort Study” in Neurology® Open Access.

Published online on August 26, 2026, this important study examined rehabilitation during hospitalization for Parkinson disease using data from more than 184,000 patients across the United States. The researchers found that while simply receiving rehabilitation was not associated with better outcomes, greater rehabilitation intensity was associated with lower rates of hospital readmission and mortality, as well as lower health care costs over the following year.

The study also highlights important disparities in the intensity of rehabilitation provided, emphasizing the need to focus not only on whether rehabilitation is offered, but also on how much therapy patients receive and ensuring equitable access to adequate rehabilitation.
