Name: GUT-ABI (Gut microbiome in acute neurological injury: a prospective study)

Enrolling hours: M-F (daytime)
Diagnosis: AIS (currently only enrolling AIS, but plans for other dx later)
Inclusion:
- >= 18 years of age at admission;
- diagnosed with a primary injury of subarachnoid hemorrhage, acute ischemic stroke, intracranial hemorrhage, subdural hematoma, or traumatic brain injury;
- are admitted to the Neuromedicine Intensive Care Unit (NMICU) at UF Health;
- the patient or their legally authorized representative (LAR) are able to provide consent for study participation.
Exclusion:
- have had gastrointestinal tract surgery in the 3 months prior to admission (not including routine diagnostic procedures such as endoscopy and colonoscopy)
- have had any prior bowel resection
- have an active surgical feeding tube or diverting ostomy at time of admission
- have had prior or active rectal or anal pathology that would preclude rectal swab sampling
- are, or are suspected to be pregnant
- have been hospitalized for any acute brain injury in the 2 months prior to admission
- are enrolled in another clinical trial or have received an investigational agent in the 3 months prior to admission
