Dr. James Wymer is a neurologist and the Melvin Greer, MD Professor of Neurology at The University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. Dr. Wymer specializes in the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular diseases along with how the brain interacts with muscles in neuromuscular disease.  Neuromuscular disease is defined as those diseases affecting the ability to control strength and movement.  This can include diseases as diverse as multiple sclerosis, various neuropathies, myopathies, and ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease. After completing his training, Dr. Wymer started his career in Upstate New York where he worked as a neurologist and co-founded/directed Upstate Clinical Research for 10 years. He has extensive clinical trial and research experience. He has been the principal investigator for numerous clinical trials including studies on ALS, diabetic peripheral neuropathy, multiple sclerosis, migraines, neurofibromatosis, and epilepsy. In 2010, he became an Associate Professor of Neurology at Albany Medical College in Albany, New York where he continued to focus on neuromuscular diseases, migraines, and multiple sclerosis.  He directed research at Albany Medical College in the neuromuscular and multiple sclerosis divisions.  In 2016, he joined the faculty at the University of Florida as the Neuromuscular Division Chief and Associate Director of Clinical Trials. He has focused on extending the UF model of patient centered care to neuromuscular diseases.  As Director of the ALS Multidisciplinary Care Team along with working as part of the muscular dystrophy, myasthenia gravis, and hereditary neuropathy clinics, Dr. Wymer has focused on patient centered care and research opportunities to advance care.  Dr. Wymer is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN), the American Association of Neuromuscular and Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM), and the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research (APCR). He is a member of several national consortiums to research neuropathic pain and ALS.
