Survey Studies

Keto

Transdisciplinary survey study assessing the utilization of ketogenic diet and to identify potential barriers for its implementation in adults with status epilepticus. Collaboration with Hopkins University.

Moyamoya

We aim to demonstrate practice variability and unveil equipoise within specific knowledge gap areas in the perioperative management of patients with Moyamoya syndrome undergoing revascularization.

Impact of App

Survey of neurocritical care program directors, faculty, housestaff, and advanced practice providers on the perceived impact of non-physician clinicians in the neuro-intensive care unit.

TTM Barriers

Partnership with Emergency Medicine department.
There remains significant heterogeneity in the application of targeted temperature management (TTM) despite international guidelines. We aim to assess physician perceptions, attitudes, and understanding of TTM in the post-cardiac arrest setting. In addition to this, we seek to assess the implications of new trial data regarding the efficacy of TTM in improving neurologic outcomes. This survey is being disseminated to members of Society for Critical Care Medicine, European Society of Intensive Care Medicine, American Academy of Neurology.

Medi-Gators characterizing VALUE

Study to observe and characterize the value gained from students who participate in virtual shadowing at the University of Florida.

Medi-Gators characterizing IMPACT

Study to observe and characterize the impact of participating in virtual shadowing on PRE- Health students’ interests, career planning, and goals.

Mutli-D simulation of acute respiratory compromise in mock COVID-19 crisis

This study involves the reviewing of technical, cognitive and effective teamwork skill sets as well as identify risk factors for non-adherence to treatment guidelines, as well as identify threats, misses and near-misses to describe the development of a high-fidelity multidisciplinary simulation program that uses evidence-based medicine, guidelines and innovative devices focused on the management of acute respiratory complications in the Neurology ICU (live simulation).

Emergency Endotracheal intubation in Neuro ICU

Retrospective study (observational study) aimed to evaluate the factors associated with endotracheal intubation in the NeuroICU, evaluate the complication rates and predictors of complication in this setting when not conducted by an anesthesiologist.

Headache Management in SAH

The aim of this study is to identify management strategies during hospitalization for patients following aneurysm rupture or spontaneous SAH and characterize variability in management internationally.

Outcomes of Patients with Neurological Emergencies

In this retrospective chart review study, we review patients with community acquired bacterial meningitis, encephalitis, and spinal cord compression and abscess, specifically reviewing time to diagnosis and time to initiation of treatment, and review length of stay/time to admission for these diagnoses in the emergency department before introduction of emergency neurology life support.

Emergency management of acute neurological emergencies in high-fidelity settings

The aim of this study is to describe the development of a high-fidelity multidisciplinary simulation program that uses evidence-based medicine and guidelines, focused on the management of acute neurological emergencies in the NeuroICU (live simulation). In this study, we will review the technical, cognitive and effective teamwork skillsets in a controlled multidisciplinary simulation, identify risk factors for non-adherence to treatment guidelines, and identify threats, misses and near-misses.

Gut microbiome

A characterization of the microbiome-gut-brain axis in patients with acute brain injury. This is translational research from bench to bedside, and offers to learn about modern lab techniques (multiomics processing) and bioinformatics

Blood Brain Barrier

The characterization of the blood brain barrier function and osmolality in cerebral edema after an acute brain injury.

Post-operative Urinary Retention (POUR)

A collaboration with the departments of Neurosurgery, Anesthesiology and Chemistry, to identify characteristic compositions of protein-based biomarkers in urine from subjects undergoing elective lumbar spine surgery collected pre-op and associated with development of POUR.

Brain Death and Organ Donation

This study aims to optimize the brain death determination process through having the neurocritical care consultation leading the management of the potential donors. We will assess time from brain death to organ resuscitation for procurement, organ retrieval yield, allograph function, and nursing satisfaction.

ICU EEG

In this study we are evaluating the effectiveness of an ICU EEG online training course among residents and fellows.
