I am an assistant professor with the department of neurology at the University of Florida College of Medicine. Additionally, I am the William T. and Janice M. Neely professor for research in multiple sclerosis. I attended medical school at the Christian-Albrecht University of Kiel in Germany, with one year spent at the University of Murcia in Spain. I graduated with my medical degree in 2012, then pursued my postgraduate neurology training in Germany at the University Hospital of Schleswig-Holstein.

After my preliminary year at SUNY Downstate Medical Center in New York, I completed my neurology residency at the University of Florida. The following year, I finished my clinical neuroimmunology fellowship at the University of California San Diego.

I am board-certified in neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and I am licensed to practice medicine in both Florida and California. My clinical and research interests include multiple sclerosis, neurosarcoidosis, neuroimmunology, neuromyelitis optica, MOG antibody disease and autoimmune encephalitis. I have contributed to many publications, as well as speak German, English and Spanish.

My name is Mayra Montalvo Perero, MD, and I am a board-certified neurologist, neurophysiologist and neuroimmunologist at the Norman Fixel Institute for Neurological Diseases at UF Health, serving as an assistant professor in the University of Florida Department of Neurology.

I completed my medical degree in 2010 at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito and my neurology residency in 2019 at Brown University. Following my residency, I completed my clinical neurophysiology fellowship in 2020 at Brown University and my autoimmune neurology fellowship in 2021 at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

I see patients for a variety of neurological disorders, including multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica, transverse myelitis, optic neuritis, sarcoidosis, autoimmune encephalitis, autoimmune epilepsy and autoimmune ataxias.

Coming from a family of physicians, I was always in awe of how the brain controls everything that happens to our body. I was fascinated about learning the anatomical and physiologic pathway that ruled our every movement.

As a care provider, I believe in advocating for patient care at multiple levels. During my career, I served as a consultant to U.S. congressional representatives as part of the Neurology on the Hill program. In 2019, I founded and worked as the supervising neurologist at Clinica Esperanza, the only community clinic to provide free neurological care for patients without insurance in Rhode Island.

I want all my patients to feel confident that I will provide them with the best care possible. I believe in listening to, and advocating for, my patients every day, and I am honored to be their neurologist.

During my free time, I enjoy spending time with my family, being outdoors and near water, traveling to see the world from different perspectives and dancing (salsa is my favorite!).
