About Filipe Sarmento
Dr. Filipe Sarmento is a Brazilian neurologist specialized in movement disorders and joined us as a Research Fellow. Currently, he collaborates with Dr. de Hemptinne and Dr. Wong at our neurotechnology lab. Originally from Vitória-ES, Dr. Sarmento moved to São Paulo for his advanced medical training before relocating to Gainesville. He completed his neurology residency and a movement disorders fellowship at the esteemed Paulista Medical School of the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP-EPM). Dr. Sarmento’s research primarily focuses in Deep Brain Stimulation management and troubleshooting for Parkinson’s Disease, Essential Tremor, and Dystonia. His current projects aim to explore the clinical implications of Local Field Potentials in movement disorders. Additionally, he is investigating non-motor symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as fatigue and dysautonomia, to enhance patient care and treatment approaches. Outside of the lab, Filipe is passionate about traveling, cycling, snowboarding, and spending quality time with his friends and family.
